Parish Hall telephone
The parish hall telephone has been out of action since 26 September, at the time of writing. The fault was reported on the 29 September, but after several promises that the fault would be rectified, a mobile telephone was purchased so that incoming call could be diverted to this telephone.
Hopefully by the time you read this, the landline’s fault will have been repaired.
Sorry to all those people who tried in vain to contact the hall or church before the 8 October.

PROPOSED DIOCESAN RE-ORGANISATION
You may be aware that some four years ago, the Bishop of Hulme was appointed to a national post with responsibility for areas of urban renewal throughout the whole of England. He retains the title of Bishop of Hulme and still lives in the diocese, but his duties in the diocese of Manchester have been considerably reduced. It is not yet clear what will happen when Bishop Stephen retires, but if a new bishop for urban renewal is appointed, that person may not necessarily retain the title of Bishop of Hulme.
The consequence of this has been some re-allocation of the areas of responsibility for our two other suffragan bishops, Bolton and Middleton. The Bishop of Bolton now has added responsibility for the deaneries of Eccles and Salford, as well as the deaneries in the Bolton archdeaconry, and the Bishop of Bolton’s official residence is now in the former vicarage at Worsley, more central to his “sphere of operation”.
As the Archdeacon of Manchester (Andrew Ballard) has announced his retirement from the end of this year, it is now being proposed to create a fourth archdeaconry (Salford), which will cover the deaneries of Eccles, Leigh and Salford, and also to split the deanery of Farnworth. Parishes south of the M61 will be transferred to Eccles deanery, and those north of the M61 will join the Bolton deanery. The Bishop of Bolton will oversee the Bolton and Salford archdeaconries, and the bishop of Middleton will look after Rochdale and the (reduced) Manchester archdeaconry.
As far as we are concerned, it’s a case of no change: we will still be in the same deanery and archdeaconry, and the Bishop of Bolton’s “area”, but bringing the Farnworth parishes back into the Bolton deanery may have some effect on parish re-organisation locally in the long term. Three parishes in Bolton deanery are seen as “at risk” because of low church attendance and the condition of their church buildings. One of these borders a parish currently in Farnworth deanery.
The Vicar of Beverley Minster in Yorkshire has been appointed Archdeacon of Bolton, and will be installed at the cathedral this month: our former curate, Cherry Vann, is already in post as Archdeacon of Rochdale. No announcement has yet been made regarding a successor to Andrew Ballard, and the proposal to create a new Archdeaconry of Salford has yet to be approved. It could be mid-2009 before we have a “full set” of senior clergy once more. |
