THE ANGLICAN CHURCH in SRI LANKA

There are two long-established Anglican dioceses in Ceylon (Colombo and Kurunegala), which did not join with the other dioceses of southern India when the United Church was formed in 1947.   There are some 52,500 church members in the two dioceses, and their bishops currently come under the direct jurisdiction of the Archbishop of Canterbury.  However, the United Church of South India does have a presence in Sri Lanka under the jurisdiction of the Bishop in Kandy, and it is possible that a United Church of Sri Lanka may eventually be formed bringing these three bishoprics together in one independent organisation.
