PARISH POSTBAG
Easier way to get to the office. Our Director of Music, Stephen, together with his wife, has moved home. Instead of travelling for an hour and a quarter from Cumbria to church they now travel from Horwich. What’s more their nearly next door neighbour is none other than our newly retired Vicar, Michael Williams!
Help for the disabled or nearly so. I have to rely on a number of aids to get me about and I wondered if the following information would be any help to anyone. · We have a cordless phone which also has facilities to store 50 telephone numbers. You can take it around with you and it saves trudging or struggling to get to the phone (it’s not a mobile phone) · I have a bath lift and a stair lift. · Walking sticks can be supplied by the Social Services if you so wish. Also the 4 and 3 wheeled Zimmer frames which are very stable. · Shopmobility is a tremendous way to be independent for going shopping around town. · Of course, most supermarkets have their own internal scooters. · There is a system run by Greater Manchester Passenger Service which supplies vouchers for journeys in taxis and the cost is reduced by 75%. For example if the fare is normally £6 it will actually cost you only £1.50. It is for people who cannot walk more than 100 yards or are registered disabled. · Of course there is also the Blue Badge for car users. Please contact me if you want further information about all these things - please ring David Bevis 417547.
Those who are having difficulties getting about Please remember Eric Calderbank who is in considerable pain with arthritis in his hips which severely restricts his movements and he so much wants to attend church. That applies to Mona Lythgoe as well. We must also remember in our prayers and thoughts those who are incapacitated in one form or another and unable to do the things they used to do.
Bereavement It is with sadness we hear of the death of Joe Derbyshire - a life long member of the congregation.
Well heeled Have you seen two well heeled young gentlemen namely Robert and Adam (aged 14 months or thereabouts) parading around in their new shoes? Then if you haven’t then you have missed the latest in fashion for such young men bedecked with flashing lights on their heels. The lads can now be found in the dark!
Flagstones The flagstones approaching the church and the Parish Hall have been treated to remove the slippery algae. Hopefully this remedial work will be done fairly frequently. However a word of warning; the rotten weather we are having may affect where you put your feet so please be vigilant. More will be said next month
Why is Easter so early? Apparently the last time Ash Wednesday fell on 6th February was in 1913. It isn’t true it’s due to global warming! Canon Alan Wolstencroft told us that at the Eucharist on Ash Wednesday.
Offer a compliment You’ll find the good feelings that flow from it will be as much yours as the recipient’s.
Ode to the telephone “The telephone has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication. The device is inherently no use to us”. Western Union internal memo. 1876.
