THE CHURCH of the PROVINCE of the SUDAN

The original diocese of Sudan, based at Khartoum, had already been divided into four by the time the Province was founded in 1976.  Membership is sparse in the north of the country, but Christianity is very strong in the south and most of the present twenty-four dioceses are in that part of the country, with the Archbishop normally based in the city of Juba.   There is still much persecution of Christians, but the church has 5,000,000 members.   Southern Sudan is still very underdeveloped, with poor communications and roads.  Dioceses therefore tend to be rather small in area, as the bishop may have to travel round his parishes on foot or by bicycle!   The present Archbishop (and Bishop of Juba) is the Most Revd Joseph Biringi Hassan Marona.                                                GAD
