Our new Vicar

I have introduced our new Vicar-to-be in my article “Life of the Priest”. Of course our big welcome will be when he is licensed on Sunday the 21st September. The reason for the delay is that any minister who is leaving his present Parish has to give a number of months’ notice. It means that we will have waited one year less 9 days for the vacancy to be filled. For the dear old Church of England this has been supersonically fast! Pity some parishes that have been known to have waited 3 years! I understand that the Revd Matthew Thompson with his family will not be taking up residence in the Vicarage and that suitable alternative housing will be found in town.

Musical Evening

It gave me great pleasure to attend this concert on 12th April at St. Peter’s to hear the choir give a varied programme for the benefit of the organ fund. In between whiles we were entertained by two young lads: one was Oliver Doyle (grandson of John Doyle) who plays the guitar and treated us to Jesu, joy of man’s desiring (Bach) and Cavatina (Myers) and also James Hulme, (oboe) accompanied by his father Gary (piano)  with Sonata in C minor (Handel) and his Largo-Allegro.

The choir sang a variety of pieces from composers such as Thomas Tallis, Johann Sebastian Bach, Stanford, Orlando Gibbons. Our guest organist played two pieces from Bach and Stephen Carleston played on the organ pieces composed by Flor Peeters and Marcel Dupre. Stephen also showed off the new grand piano with Thelonious Monk’s Round Midnight. A thoroughly enjoyable evening.

A very welcome visitor

It was good to see Pat Ryder on a visit to the town. She told me she was settling into Surrey life with her daughter and is still looking for a suitable dwelling. It was very apparent to me that she misses St. Peter’s very much, and all the friends she has here. The church she now goes to is small with a lively congregation, especially the number of children who attend.

New appointments

With the retirement of the Church Wardens Michael Collier and Norman Fort we are able to announce that David Morlidge and Evelyn Weston have been appointed to succeed them. This gives us an opportunity to give many thanks to Michael and Norman for the unstinting amount of work they put into their posts especially because of the demands made on them due to the Interregnum and over the appointment of the new Vicar. Well done to both of them.

More help for those who have difficulties

Continuing with my campaign to help those who find difficulties with physical activities I have discovered another help. If you have problems with moving your wheelie-bins all you need to do is to contact the Waste Disposal Dept. who will collect and return the bins from the area of the house. Telephone 333333 and ask to be put through to Waste Disposal and talk about your particular problem.

Laughter in church

Three boys are in the school playground bragging about their fathers. The first boy says, “My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a poem, and they give him £50”. The second boy says, “That’s nothing, my Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, and calls it a song, and they give him £100” The third boy says, “I’ve got you both beat. My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a sermon, and it takes eight people to collect all the money!”

Sit in a church

Regardless of what you believe in, churches and temples are extraordinary places of peace. Take a pew and absorb the atmosphere of absolute peace and calm that permeates them.
