Long distance call

Long ago, a famous Methodist preacher travelled to Plymouth to preach at a church anniversary service there. With time to spare before the service, he entered a telephone kiosk to phone home. Those were the days when operators had to deal personally with long distance trunk calls and so the caller was asked to hold on while his call was being progressed. He began to sing a hymn softly to himself to while away the time. A brief silence followed only to be broken by a voice on the line saying, “Sing that again”. The telephone operator expressed heartfelt thanks to the preacher. Neither party knew who the other was!

Not ready yet

I was taken ill at a recent Sunday Eucharist and after much confusion I was seen by paramedics who had been called. After a while Rita, together with the Church Wardens and other members of the congregation gathered around the ambulance waiting for me to emerge when I felt better. Very many thanks to everyone who came to my aid. I heard later that Shirley Mayhew had offered to give me mouth to mouth resuscitation but as I told her later she was a bit premature because St. Peter said he was not ready to receive me yet! I missed out on that one!

Items in the Newsletter

It was good to see such a variety of items in the last Newsletter and very pleasing to see an article from Lynn Marsden and to welcome the fact she was able to produce it at all. Lynn was a regular communicant for a number of years before her illness forced her to stop coming. We wish her all our good wishes and include Jeremy her son in our thoughts and prayers. I would also say she was a regular contributor to the Newsletter which prompts me to say her article may inspire people to pick up their pens and also write.

David Bevis welcomes you…….

He will be celebrating his 80th birthday on 1st August. To celebrate this occasion you are invited to partake of a glass of wine and special birthday cake in the Parish Hall. this will be on Sunday 27th July, following the Eucharist. I would think that coffee and tea will also be available - dress optional!

How frustrated can you get!

A man walked into a Burger King at breakfast time and produced a gun demanding cash. The cash attendant turned him down because he couldn’t open the cash register without a food order. When the intended robber ordered onion rings, the attendant said they weren’t available for breakfast. The robber, frustrated, walked away!

Prayer

Father of all, we give you thanks and praise, that when we were still far off you met us in your Son, and brought us home.         Post communion prayer, Common Worship.
