“The Hunger for Depth and Meaning”- Spirituality in a Secular Age

Father Laurence Freeman is a Benedictine monk and the Director of the World Community for Christian Meditation. He has worked with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, with leaders of Islamic communities and with seekers of all faiths to realise peace at a personal and collective level. He will be addressing a number of meetings in the North of England in September 2008.

In an age where institutional religion is often held in suspicion or even rejected, spirituality (the inner life and the way to personal authenticity) catches the headlines. How do we relate this personal life to the Christian tradition and to other faiths surrounding us in a multi-cultural world? Meditation is a way to live this question and experience the truth to which it points. In this series of talks and dialogues Laurence Freeman, a monk representing both an ancient Christian tradition and a contemporary ecumenical contemplative community (www.wccm.org) will address and try to illuminate the spiritual landscape we inhabit today. At each of the meetings in this series he will introduce the way of meditation and a period of practice.

The title for these talks is -

“The Hunger for Depth and Meaning”- Spirituality in a Secular Age

On Thursday September 11th, we have booked St. Margaret’s Church Prestwich (Debby’s church) as venue for one of these talks. It is entitled “The Power of Silence - Meditation for all age groups”.

The morning begins with coffee at 9-3O a.m. for 10 a.m. There will be Laurence’s talk, a period of meditation, time for discussion, and a book stall. Drinks are provided and people are asked to bring their own lunch.  A donation is requested to pay for expenses.

We hope that Bolton Parish Church people will join with our meditation groups and our vicar to be the Rev Matt Thompson on what should be an inspiring and enjoyable occasion.  All the Churches in the Diocese are invited as well as other denominations.

If you are interested, please let me or another member of the group know, especially if you would like a lift.
